How to Get Ultimate Viessa in The First Descendant: Step-by-Step Guide

How to Get Ultimate Viessa in The First Descendant: Step-by-Step Guide

If you’ve spent any time running Void Intercept Battles or scrolling through The First Descendant character tier lists, you’ve almost certainly seen Ultimate Viessa top nearly every ranking for support and crowd control. I spent three weekends grinding the wrong missions trying to unlock her before I figured out the exact sequence of requirements most skip over, so I’m breaking down every step to avoid the mistakes I made. This guide covers exactly how to get Ultimate Viessa the first descendant, from pre-requisite quests to the fastest farming routes for rare materials, plus tips to beat the final unlock boss even if you’re running a lower-level squad.

Core Requirements to Get Ultimate Viessa in The First Descendant

Before you even start collecting materials for Ultimate Viessa, you need to tick a few non-negotiable boxes first. A lot of players skip these steps and waste hours grinding resources they can’t even use yet, so double check you meet all of these before you dive in. I learned this the hard way, I spent 2 days farming Frost Core Shards before I realized I was still 2 ranks short of Player Rank 45, and the quest wasn’t even available yet.

You cannot access the Ultimate Viessa unlock quest until you have raised standard Viessa to level 30 and maxed her base skill tree. The quest only pops up in your side quest tab after that condition is met, and you won’t find it listed anywhere in the Void Battle menu before then. The full list of pre-requisites is below:

  • Complete main story Act 3, Mission 7: Frozen Wasteland Exploration to unlock the Frost Void Intercept Battle zone
  • Unlock standard Viessa via the 100 Void Fragment exchange at the Descendant Research Terminal
  • Level standard Viessa to level 30 and fully upgrade all 4 of her base skills
  • Reach Player Rank 45 to access the Ultimate Variant unlock quest line
  • Once you tick all these boxes, the “Ultimate Viessa Unlock” quest will appear in your side quest tab, and you can start collecting the required materials to complete it. Don't waste time farming Ultimate Viessa materials before you hit Player Rank 45, because the quest won't appear, and you might accidentally use rare materials on other upgrades in the meantime.

Fastest Farming Routes for Rare Unlock Materials

The quest requires four specific materials to complete: 12 Frost Core Shards, 8 Enhanced Void Catalysts, 25 Glacial Echoes, and 500,000 Gold. Most players take 3-4 days to farm these if they follow the most efficient routes, but if you’re grinding casually you can wrap it up in a week max. I’ve tested every possible farming spot for these materials, so these are the fastest methods I found.

Frost Core Shards are the rarest material on the list, and they drop exclusively from the Frost Void Intercept Battle. Running the Hard difficulty variant gives you a 3x higher drop rate for Frost Core Shards than Normal mode, so it's worth waiting for a full squad instead of running solo on Normal. If you don’t have a full squad, you can use the in-game matchmaking feature, most players running Frost Hard are there for the same materials, so you’ll get a group in under a minute almost every time. Each run takes 8-10 minutes, and you’ll get 2-3 shards per clear on average.

Enhanced Void Catalysts drop from weekly Void Boss missions, but you can also get them from dismantling unused Epic rarity descendant equipment. I prefer dismantling spare gear because it's faster than waiting for weekly resets, just make sure you don't dismantle gear you might use for other characters. Glacial Echoes are random drops from enemies in the Frozen Wasteland open world, but the best spot is the Ice Caves sub-area, where elite enemies spawn every 2 minutes, each has a 15% chance to drop an Echo. You can farm these while waiting for your Void Battle cooldown to reset, so you don't waste any downtime. If you’re short on gold, run the daily Gold Rush missions, each gives 120,000 gold for 5 minutes of work, so you can hit the 500k requirement in 5 runs max.

How to Beat the Ultimate Viessa Unlock Boss Fight

Once you turn in all materials to the Descendant Research Terminal, you’ll unlock a special solo boss fight against the Frost Warden. This fight is solo only, so you can’t bring squadmates, and you have to use standard Viessa for the entire fight, which is a common surprise for players who usually run DPS characters. Don’t stress if you die a few times, you can retry the fight as many times as you want with no extra material cost.

The fight has two phases, and you’ll need to adjust your playstyle for each. In phase 1, the boss throws slow but high-damage ice projectiles, and you can use Viessa’s ice wall skill to block them and reflect damage back. Reflecting 10 projectiles back at the boss during phase 1 will stun him for 10 seconds, letting you deal massive damage with your ultimate skill. Don't waste your ultimate before you get that stun, it will barely tickle him otherwise. I made this mistake on my first two attempts, and I spent 15 minutes chipping away at his health before I figured out the reflect trick.

Phase 2 kicks in when the boss hits 50% health. He’ll start summoning small ice minions that heal him for 5% of his total health every 10 seconds, so prioritize taking out the minions first. They only have 10% of the boss’s health so they go down fast, and if you ignore them he’ll heal back to full health in no time. Once you clear the minions, go back to reflecting his projectiles to get stuns, and you’ll take him down in 2-3 more stun cycles. Once you beat the boss, you get the Ultimate Viessa unlock item immediately, you just have to go back to the Descendant Research Terminal to activate it.

First Things to Do After Unlocking Ultimate Viessa

A lot of players just jump into high-level missions right after unlocking her, but there are a few steps you should take first to get the most out of her kit. Ultimate Viessa has a completely different skill tree than standard Viessa, so the default setup you used for the boss fight won’t work well for endgame squad content.

First, reset her skill tree, because the default setup is focused on solo damage, but her biggest strength is support and crowd control for endgame squad content. Invest first in her passive skill that gives 20% damage resistance to all squad members within 10 meters, that's the skill that makes her a must-have for high-level Void Intercept Battles. Next, put points into her extended freeze skill, which makes her crowd control effects last 3 seconds longer, enough time for your squad to take down even the tankiest elite enemies.

Next, unlock her signature weapon, the Glacial Repeater, which you can get for 50 Void Fragments at the weapon shop. It syncs perfectly with her skills, applying freeze effects on every third hit, so you can stack crowd control even when your skills are on cooldown. Then, run a few Normal difficulty Void Battles to test her skill rotation, get used to her longer cooldowns compared to standard Viessa, she's a bit slower to use but far more impactful in group content. You can also customize her skin and voice lines if you want, but that's totally optional, I waited until I had her max level to mess with cosmetics.

Unlocking Ultimate Viessa doesn't have to be the weeks-long grind a lot of players make it out to be, as long as you follow the right steps and avoid the common mistakes I mentioned earlier. Whether you're looking to carry your squad through endgame content or just want one of the most versatile characters in the game, taking the time to get Ultimate Viessa the first descendant is 100% worth the effort.
